Any opportunity to
watch Victor Andrada perform is time well spent, and Saturday
night was no exception. At a time when many Texans were staking
out tables in smoky honky tonks and bars to watch their evening's
entertainment, I found myself sitting in an upscale coffee house
in McKinney. Surrounded by overstuffed chairs and couches and
fine wooden tables and art on the walls, I must admit that at
first I felt just a bit out of place. However, Infusions is one
of those places where the folks that run it go out of their way
to make you feel welcome. And Andrada is one of those performers
that completely erases all doubt as to why you came.
Infusions and Andrada are good for each other. The atmosphere
of Infusions is a perfect setting for Andrada's cool folk-jazz
musical stylings. An added bonus was the fact that Infusions
has some of the best acoustics that I have heard in some time.
Andrada's guitar riffs and booming voice resonated through the
coffee house in such a way, that had I closed my eyes it would
have been easy to imagine myself in a concert hall. It is a great
venue for live music, and Andrada was the perfect musician for
such a venue.
Through the course of the evening, Andrada covered most of
the material on his two CD releases, Illuminaste
and Walking on Eggshells. Andrada's compositions are in
a league of their own. They are a fine blend of folk and jazz
performed by an extremely gifted artist. One of the things that
still surprises me is that we are able to have this caliber of
entertainment in such a small venue as this. Count your blessings
metroplex! My guess is that it will not be too long before we
are paying premium dollar and being crowded into a theatre with
standing room only to see the likes of Andrada. He is one of
the hottest acts in this area today, having already won the acclaim
of peers and critics alike.
Andrada is not beyond throwing some cover songs into the mix,
from such a wide array of artists as Willie Nelson, Fats Domino,
Waylon Jennings and James Taylor. However, in Andrada's capable
hands, the meld with the rest of his numbers so effortlessly
that it becomes hard to imagine that they are covers. The ability
of this man is such that at times throughout his performances,
you would swear that you are hearing at least two guitar players
when in fact you know better. How one person could be blessed
with so much talent remains a mystery to a hack like myself.
If you still haven't seen Andrada in person, then I strongly
encourage you to do so. Andrada is the complete package. Well-written
songs played by a master guitarist possessing one of the smoothest
voices to come along since Max Stalling. That is Victor Andrada.
Victor Andrada is scheduled to play Infusions again on January
5, 2002, and I strongly encourage you to make plans now to get
out and see him in this venue, since it is perfect for his brand
of music. If you would like to know where you could catch Andrada
live in the meantime, keep your eyes glued to the Rockzillaworld
Concert Calendar for upcoming dates. Or, you can email Andrada
at Victorandrada1-at-aol.com
and asked to be put on his newsletter list. Andrada is rumored
to have a web site in the works at www.victorandrada.net.
