Okay guys, listen
up and listen closely. I am about to give you some of the best
advice that you will probably ever get from me. As all of you
know, autumn is just around the corner, then winter follows soon
after. If you want to have Sundays to yourself, so that you can
take in the football game, and yet still want to have peace in
the family, then pay close attention to this review.
Take a Friday or a Saturday night in the upcoming weeks, build
a fire in the fireplace, ship the kiddos off to the grandparents
for an evening, turn the lights down low, have some of your beverage
of preference and a little finger food, and then put Victor Andrada's
Illuminaste in the CD player. This CD is the closet thing
to an audio mood setter that I have heard in quite some time.
In fact, I haven't witnessed any collection of recorded music
that has quite this effect when it comes to romance since Michael
Franks' Tiger in the Rain. Trust me fellas, after a night
with you and Victor, the missus won't object to a day of football,
or even a weekend of it for that matter.
I was first introduced to the music of Victor Andrada a little
over a month ago, at the first Rockzilla.net Songwriter Night
at the Lone Star Café and Club. That magic evening has
already been chronicled in a previous review, but what I failed
to mention in that review was the huge part that Andrada played
in making that particular show so special. Almost everyone in
attendance were totally blown away not only at Andrada's prowess
on the guitar, and his ability to not only keep up with the other
two musicians and at times quietly upstage them, but also at
his smooth vocal stylings. In fact, after listening to many of
Andrada's compositions that night, I realized that I might well
be watching one of the Metroplex's best kept secrets.
One listen to Illuminaste and I was convinced that
Andrada is in fact one of the best-kept secrets in the Metroplex.
This CD contains eight tracks of original tunes, all oozing with
so much romance that all the work to transforming a slob like
me into a svelte lover has already been done. I'm telling you
guys, there can be peace in the family again! Beyond its impact
on everyone's love life, Illuminaste contains some of the best-crafted
music that is coming out of Dallas/ Ft. Worth these days. Believe
me, I am not knocking any of the great talent in the Metroplex
when I say this either. It is just that Andrada is an extremely
talented musician, as a songwriter, guitarist and singer.
The Irving based Andrada's music can be best described as
Latin infused acoustic jazz that contains hints of folk and Tejano
music. His guitar work on this album is breath taking, so clean
and precise. What I did find odd was that for someone who is
such a virtuoso on the guitar, Andrada is content to allow his
playing to merely supply respite to his powerful vocal work.
There is no showing off by Andrada on this record, and by being
so subtle, he actually showcases the full range of his talents.
However, if you listen closely to "Between the Lines,"
"Vacio Sin Ti" and "Special Times," and you
will get a good idea of just how capable Andrada is with the
guitar.
Perhaps the only thing more impressive than his guitar playing,
are the wonderfully smooth and passionate vocal lines of Andrada's.
They go hand in hand with his ever-capable guitar playing to
mold a musical tapestry that is certain to leave a lasting impression
on any listener.
The songs that Andrada has assembled for Illuminaste
were all penned by him, and contain three English and five Spanish
language tracks. However, the language that these songs speak,
like the music itself, is truly universal. This is no pretentious,
upscale, artsy jazz here. The music on this album speaks from
the heart, as well as to it. Love and relationships are the major
underlying themes in Andrada's lyrics, and they speak to the
listener only as one who is willing, night after night, gig after
gig, to spill his heart and soul before the audience. Andrada's
music is much like one of his performances, pure, honest, and
extremely powerful.

Thanks to Andrada, you don't have to take my word for how powerful
his music can be. At his mp3 site, you can listen to every track
on Illuminaste in its entirety. Then you can purchase
your own copy in one of two formats, and be sowing harmony in
your household by next weekend.
