Top: This year's BW Stevenson Songwriters Competititon
winner, Jay Johnnson
For twenty four years, David Card has been bringing some of
the finest music available to his Lower Greenville bar, Poor
David's Pub. For the past thirteen years, David has also brought
us the BW Stevenson Songwriters Competition, in honor of the
legendary Texas songwriter.
This year, dozens of entrants submitted recordings, and thirteen
semifinalists competed by performing two songs each. A panel
of judges, made up of past winners and members of the local music
media then selected six finalists. Then on Wednesday, April 25,
these six performed four songs each to determine the winner.
All of these folks did an outstanding job. If you haven't
attended this event before, you've missed something. The music
is great and the crowd is the most respectful I've ever seen.
This year's winner, Jay Johnson will receive $300 in cash,
a pass to the Kerrville Folk Festival, and an opening gig for
"someone who will pack the place". Expect to hear a
lot more from the other five finalists: Lynn Adler, David Brazier,
Courtney Fairchild, Mark Gorman, and Jeff Talmadge.
The level of talent that David manages to draw to the competition
is amazing, and certainly deserving of more attention ffrom the
local music media.
David Card congratulates a stunned Jay Johnson.
